There are so many reasons to visit Europe: the diverse culture, the architecture and the cuisine, to name a few. However, avoiding some common traveling mistakes will make your trip all the more enjoyable.

Whether it’s your first time visiting the continent or a return trip to your favorite city, there is so much to do and see that a little planning goes a long way. Follow these four tips to help you plan the perfect European excursion.

Travel Out of Season

European beaches and towns become crowded in the summer months, plus it’s more expensive to travel to major destinations like Paris and Rome in high season. Save some money and enjoy a more relaxing vacation by traveling during the autumn or winter months.

You’ll want to check the weather forecast before you go, though most Mediterranean countries still enjoy a pleasant climate from May through October.

Save on Travel, Speed on Accommodation

Most people have to budget carefully when they travel, so it’s important to know when to splash out and when to save your money. In most European cities, the public transport is so good that you can travel on the cheap without having to hire a car. Similarly, Europe has some of the world’s cheapest airlines, so you’ll be able to get a budget flight and save some money.

Accommodation, on the other hand, is something that’s worth shelling out for. Luxury accommodation in Europe can be highly affordable, such as the many beautiful villas in Mykonos and even certain hotels. On the whole, it’s better to save on travel by taking budget flights and trains, while paying a little extra for somewhere to stay.

Make Reservations Before You Travel

One of the most exciting aspects of travel can be planning your trip before you leave. What happens then, when you arrive at that restaurant you’ve always wanted to visit, only to find they’re booked up for the entirety of your stay? It’s not uncommon for popular eateries and tourist attractions to get booked up in advance, especially in major European cities.

Your best bet is to make plans about where you’ll eat, as well as which tours and attractions you’ll visit, and make reservations before you arrive. It may take some of the spontaneity out of your trip, but it will avoid you missing out on some of the highlights.

Know What to Pack

The weather in Europe varies depending on when and where you travel, but if you’re accustomed to a tropical climate, then the change can come as a shock. Always pack a fold-up umbrella in case of rain, and be sure to bring layers you can wrap up in when the weather cools at night.

The best way to explore a European city is by foot, so make sure you pack some comfortable walking shoes. Lastly, remember your European travel adapter, your Euros, and a camera so you can take some great photos.

Traveling somewhere new is always a great adventure, but it pays to do some research before you set off. Spend some time planning your visit and your trip to Europe will be all the more enjoyable.
